Falafel (Middle Eastern Food)

It is a deep-fried ball made from the ground chickpeas or fava beans and it is also good when both are mixed. It is commonly served with pita which wrapped in a flatbread known as lafa in Middle East. Falafel can be topped in different dish; it can be with salad, pickled veggies or drizzled with hot sauce.

Falafel becomes popular because of the recipe of the dish, for the vegetarian and vegans it really suits their diet and also who are taking care with their health. The standard shape of the Falafel is round but nowadays it is served also in patties shape that can be filled in burgers.

Today, Falafel is eaten all over the world, in North America, Falafel grew and become popular. Falafel was found only in Middle East but prior to way back 1970’s North America was visited Middle East and went to some restaurants and ordered Falafel. When they discover and tasted Falafel, it became one of the comfort food for the Americans way back 1970’s.

Did you know that there is also “World Largest Falafel”?

The current record of the size of the Falafel is 74.75kg (164.4lb.), this was set in Amman, Jordan last July 28, 2012 while the previous record was 23.94kg. In addition to that, the largest serving of Falafel is 5,173kg and made by Chef Ramzi Choueiri and some of the culinary students of Al-Kafaat University.

Falafel is healthy and easy to prepare, and you can partner it with different kind of side dishes. If you love to try Falafel and make your own version of it, here are the ingredients.


INGREDIENTS:

1 1/4 cups dried chickpeas (7 oz.)
2 garlic cloves, chopped
3/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
About 6 cups vegetable oil (48 fl oz)

PROCEDURE:

Soak the chicken peas in a cold water for about 12 hours.
Drain.
Purée chicken peas with the entire remaining recipe except oil.
Spread purée in a baking pan and let it dry for about an hour.
Scoop 2 tablespoon of purée and make a ball-shape (the size of the purée is depending on you)
Fry.

Serve with side dish (hot sauce or salad)
