Nasi Lemak (Malaysian Food)

Malaysian cuisine is consisting of traditions and practices that reflect the multi-ethnic makeup of its population. Malaysian cuisine also has a national dish and it is Nasi Lemak.

Nasi Lemak, it is a dish cooked in coconut milk and “pandan “leaf that is commonly found in Malaysia.
The country such as Brunei, Singapore and Southern Thailand Nasi Lemak is also popular.

Nasi Lemak is usually for breakfast, because it is served with meat, vegetables and rice, it will make your day energized and the meal is heavy that is why it is best for breakfast. The Malaysia considers this as their national dish because the variation is very similar to the original version of Nasi Lemak. However, many Malaysian Indians are Hindus: Hindus do not eat beef that is why there some variation that Nasi Lemak is served with curry like, fish curry, lamb curry and chicken curry.

If you want to try Nasi Lemak at home, here are the ingredients.


INGREDIENTS:

Coconut Milk Steamed Rice

2 cups rice
3 screwpine leaves (tie them into a knot)
Salt to taste
1 or 5.6 oz. can of coconut milk
some water

Tamarind Juice

1 cup water
Tamarind Pulp

Dried Anchovies Sambal

1/2 red onion
1 cup dried anchovies
1 clove garlic
4 shallots
10 dried chilies
1 tsp. prawn paste
1/4 tsp. of salt
1 tbsp. Of sugar

Other Ingredient

2 Eggs (hard boiled) (optional)
3 small fish (sardines)
1 small cucumber

DIRECTION:

Put the rice and all the ingredients of Milk Steamed Rice and cook in medium heat until it softens.

Wash the anchovies and drain.
Fry the anchovies until light to golden brown and set aside.

In a food processor, put prawn paste, shallots, chilies and process until it grinded well.

Slice the onions into rings.
Soak the tamarind pulp for 15 minutes in water and squeeze until the flavor of the tamarind extracts.

In a pan, heat oil and fry the spice paste until it fragrant.
Add onion rings, ikan bilis and stir continuously.
Add salt, water and the tamarind juice.
Let it simmer until the consistency is gravy like and set aside.
Cut the small fish into half and season with salt.
Deep fry the fish until crunchy.
Cut the cucumber (any shape you want)

Place the rice on the center of your plate and pour some sambal ikan bilis on the side of the plate.
Serve it with fried fish, cucumber, and hard-boiled egg if desired.
