Gỏi Cuốn (Vietnamese Food)

Gỏi Cuốn means rice paper rolls or salad rolls in the North, Central and Southern Vietnamese dialect.
It is Vietnamese traditional dish consisting of meat, prawn and vegetables. Gỏi Cuốn is listed at number 30 on “World’s 50 Most Delicious Food” by CNN Go in 2011. This dish gained popularity because of the healthy and fresh ingredients of Gỏi Cuốn. These rolls are very popular and it is always considered as appetizer among Vietnamese restaurants.

Vietnamese Cuisine featured the combination of five fundamental taste elements in their overall meal. Vietnamese has an ingredient that is very common to them and it includes fish sauce, shrimp paste, soy sauce, herbs and more.

Gỏi Cuốn fillings can vary from pork and sausage slices and also shrimp and fish will improve the taste of this dish.

If you want to make your own Gỏi Cuốn it is easy to prepare. Here are the ingredients.


INGREDIENTS:

1 package clear edible rice paper sheet
1⁄2 lb. cooked chicken
1⁄2 lb. cooked small shrimp (, peeled, deveined, halved)
1 bunch fresh cilantro leaves
1 bunch fresh mint leaves
1 head leafy lettuce, washed
1 cucumber, peeled and cut into strips
1 cup fresh bean sprout
1 package vermicelli rice noodles
Hoisin Sauce, to taste
chopped peanuts
Nuoc Nam, Vietnamese spicy fish sauce

DIRECTION:

• Pre-cook all the meat and let it cool.
Prepare the rice noodle and it should be white, long and at room temperature.
Clean all the veggies and dry them.

• Dip the rice paper wrapper in water very quickly.
Lay on flat surface.
Put noodle, meat, shrimp, cilantro and mint leaves, lettuce, cucumber and bean sprouts.
Do not over stuff the wrapper it may broke if the ingredients are overcrowded.
Carefully roll up but not too tight.

• As a dipping sauce, put hoisin sauce, chopped peanuts and spicy soy sauce (optional) .
Serve immediately.

Tip: Do not keep the prepared or wrapped Gỏi Cuốn in fridge, this will harden up. It is best to make just as many as you plan to serve. You can store the unassembled fillings in the fridge and prepare it when needed.

Yes! It is easy to prepare right? But you have to pick the correct spring roll rice papers; it is not the same with the available wrappers in the market like wonton wrappers or eggroll wrappers which must be cooked.

You can find the rice paper wrappers in Asian markets as well as for rice noodle vermicelli and hoisin sauce.
