Ugali (Ugandan dish)


Ugandan cuisine is consisting of both traditional and modern style of cooking; with English and Arab influences they discover a lot of food that help them to create a delicious food.

Most of the tribe in Uganda have their own style of cooking depending on the region, the dish and delicacies has different taste but delicious.

A dish includes various vegetables, potatoes, bananas and other tropical fruits. They are also popular when it comes to both fresh and dried variety of fruits and vegetables.

The usual meat they eat is beef and goat, main dishes usually centered on sauces, they love to make sauce and stew because they are rich in meat and beans.

Ugali is one of their popular dishes that usually served and cooked with celebration, this dish is very simple and easy to prepare.

Ugali is similar to Southern Africa’s mealie-meal and usually made from maize. This dish is starchy and accompaniment from the African soup, stew or sauce. Generally made by boiling and stirring the starchy ingredients to the water until it smoothen.

Having this recipe is so much easy and simple to do. Have a try, here are the ingredients.


4 cups finely ground cornmeal
8 cups water


In a saucepan, boil water.
Slowly pour the cornmeal into boiling water.
Avoid forming a lump.

Stir continuously and mash the lumps.
Add more cornmeal until it thickens like mashed potato.

Cook for 3-4 minutes more, continue stirring.
Top with butter or margarine, if desired.
Cover and keep warm.

Serve immediately.
It accompanied with meat and vegetable stew on the side.

Ugali will be your rice; you can combine this dish in any meat with saucy dip. Also perfect with soup that will help you to create much delicious meal.
